A RAINBOW OF PLASTIC BOTTLES
Plastic bottles, which are considered environmental wastes and have negative impact on human health, have been turned into a rainbow by Gökhan Keskin, Graduate Student in IUE Design Studies Program. Keskin, with his project developed as part of Ethics and Social Responsibility in Design course, wanted to show reaction to plastic bottles ending up in oceans, natural habitats and landfills by creating a rainbow using them.
Keskin stated that he taught about issues such as plastic bottles becoming environmental wastes, privatization of water, etc., said that “Use of plastic bottles, which is a hidden but a very significant factor in the increase of cancer today, has also major environmental and economic effects in addition to effecting human health negatively. 25 liters of water is used for a production and delivery of 1 liter bottled water. The amount of plastic in the oceans has exceeded 40 thousand pieces per square meter. Plastic, in time, dissolves into small particles making sea habitat think that they are bait. However, the sea creatures consuming these particles die eventually because they cannot digest them. 1 million sea birds and 100 thousand marine mammals on the average die every year.”
Ironic Designing
Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol A which is hazardous for human health, said Keskin and indicated a need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Keskin said that he tried to raise awareness among people by making an irony through his creation of a fake rainbow.
